Dear ReWilder,
Today, we're celebrating Stop Food Waste Day - a day dedicated to raising awareness about the issue of food waste and its impact on our planet. Did you know that 1.3 billion tons of food, which is equivalent to one-third of the global food supply, is wasted each year? This not only wastes valuable resources and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, but it also exacerbates food insecurity and hunger around the world.
βCutting food waste is a delicious way of saving money, helping to feed the world and protect the planet.β β Tristram Stuart, English author and environmental campaigner.Β
At ReWild Africa, we think that a regenerative approach to food and agriculture, where everything is used and nothing is wasted, is the future. This approach will lead to a more abundant food system that is able to cater for all, and leave nobody behind. The world population is continuously growing and we need to shift our focus away from producing more food to feed more people. Instead, we need to focus on feeding more people while wasting less of what we have produced.Β
The fight against food waste starts in our homes and kitchens, where we can take simple steps to reduce our own food waste. This could include planning meals ahead of time, storing food properly, and composting food scraps. Solutions to problems that are as widespread as food waste need a collective and collaborative approach. It needs us to play a part by slowly adopting practices that reduce challenges such as food waste in our own households. This impact can then spread to a community, national and global level.
By taking action to reduce food waste, we can not only help the environment but also save money, create jobs, and support our local communities. Every small step counts, and together we can create a more sustainable and equitable food system for ourselves and future generations.
So, let's make every day a day to reduce food waste and regenerate our planet. Together, we can create a more sustainable future for ourselves and for generations to come.
Happy Stop Food Waste Day!
